Who was Bhai Mani Singh?
Bhai Mani Singh was a devoted follower of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and Guru Gobind Singh Ji. He underwent baptism in 1699 and played a significant role in Sikh history. Mata Sundari Ji sent him to resolve conflicts between the Tatt Khalsa and Bandai Khalsa factions in Amritsar. Bhai Mani Singh became the Head Granthi of Sri Darbar Sahib Amritsar and worked towards eradicating corruption in the Khalsa Panth. He was a renowned scholar and authored valuable books like “Gyan Ratnavali” and “Bhagat Ratnavali.” During Zakaria Khan’s rule, Bhai Mani Singh bravely removed guards from Darbar Sahib. He organized a gathering of Sikhs on Diwali but learned of a military attack planned by Zakaria Khan. Fortunately, no Sikhs were present in Amritsar when the attack occurred. Zakaria Khan ordered Bhai Mani Singh’s arrest and demanded payment, but Bhai Mani Singh refused, choosing martyrdom instead. He was executed in 1738, inspiring great fervor among the Sikh community, leading to the formation of misals and their eventual fight for independence.
