The Living Guru
Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is also known as Aad Granth or Aad Sri Guru Granth Sahib. The basic word in these verses is ‘Granth’, which literally means book. Sahib and Sri are worthy of respect; The word Guru is associated with the inheritance of Guruship.
The literal meaning of Aad is the first or the first, which separates this Granth from the second holy book of the Sikhs, Dasam Granth, which contains the Bani of the Tenth Patshah Guru Gobind Singh.
The authors of Guru Granth Sahib’s works belonged to different categories and sects; Among them are Hindus, and Muslims – both from lower and upper castes.
It contains hymns of 7 Gurus, Other Bhagats, Bhatts, and many more. It is composed in twenty-two languages and scripted in Gurmukhi.
Guru Granth Sahib Ji is the only scripture, in spite of its multi-authorship and interfaith nature was scribed, proofread, and signed for authenticity by the founders of Sikhism in their lifetime. These far-sighted measures and use of poetry as a medium helped preserve the scripture throughout many onslaughts of history over a period of many centuries.
